Do you need to register for a Director Identification Number?

Are you a director or looking to become one? If so, from November 2021 you will need to apply for a Director Identification Number (or Director ID).

Applications are now open via Australian Business Registry Services.

What is a Director ID?

A Director Identification Number is a unique 15-digit identifier you need to apply for once and will keep forever. It will help prevent the use of false or fraudulent director identities.

Who needs to apply?

You need a director ID if you’re an eligible officer of:

  • a company, a registered Australian body or a registered foreign company under the Corporations Act 2001
  • an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander corporation registered under the Corporations (Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander) Act 2006 (CATSI Act)

An eligible officer is a person who is appointed as:

  • a director
  • an alternate director who is acting in that capacity.

Directors must apply for their director ID themselves because they need to verify their identity. No one can apply on their behalf.

Please note that you do not need to apply if you have Director in your title but have not been appointed as a director under the Corporations or CATSI Act.
